Ford is finally recalling a whole lot of Ford EcoSport and Focus models — more than 139,730 in the U.S., and another 7,164 in Canada — equipped with the company’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. Following an investigation, Ford and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found a fix for those Ford owners complaining about failed motors due to an oil system that clogs itself.

The issue is only found in 2018 to 2022 Ford Ecosports (including 2017 models in the U.S.) and 2016 to 2018 Ford Focus hatchbacks powered by the 1.0L three-cylinder engine. According to Transport Canada, on those affected vehicles, “the engine oil pump tensioner and/or the engine oil pump drive belt could fail and cause a loss of engine oil pressure.”

An NHTSA document says the engine-oil pump-drive belt tensioner arm can be fractured or separated from the tensioner backing plate, while the pump-drive belt material may degrade and lose teeth. If this occurs, it can result in a loss of power to the wheels or braking assist.

Ford is notifying owners by mail, and they’ll be advised to take their vehicle to a dealership to be inspected. If required, the dealership will replace the oil-pump drive belt tensioner assembly, as well as the oil-pump drive belt, at no additional cost.

You can also checkonline at Transport Canada, using your VIN, to see if your SUV is affected. Transport Canada’s number for the Ford recall is 2023-704, while the manufacturer’s recall number is 23S64.
