Toyota’s Extended Warranty Coverage: Everything You Need To Know (2024)

Toyota has some of the most popular vehicles with its RAV4 SUV and hybrid Prius and go-to sedans like the Corolla and Camry. No matter if it’s a plug-in RAV4 Prime, hybrid Crown or all-electric bZ4X, the new vehicle warranty (which we cover separately) eventually ends. For peace of mind as your new or used vehicle ages, Toyota offers a range of extended coverages. Toyota breaks down its coverages clearly, but pricing is harder to pin down. We found rough ranges for each plan level.

Platinum, Gold and Powertrain Protection plans offer different terms, while ToyotaCare offers auxiliary services for maintenance, upkeep and emergency services. For those with Toyota Certified Used Vehicles, a similar selection of warranty coverage is available, even for hybrids and fuel cell vehicles (Toyota has the Mirai, mostly for California car owners). Especially when buying a used vehicle, a little extended warranty insurance never hurts.

For lesser coverage but also lower cost, avoid Platinum as the other two lower plans can drop as low as $1,000. Looking at one specific example, monthly payments for a 2015 Tacoma pickup with 100,000 miles would be approximately $1,132 annually or $95 per month. But Toyota no longer shares extended warranty costs online or via email, so each plan has to be negotiated with the dealer.

We’ve broken down all the different coverages Toyota offers below.

Toyota’s Extended Warranty Coverage: Everything You Need To Know (2)

Toyota Extended Warranty

Toyota’s extended warranties, well, extend the vehicle’s basic warranty up to three years or 50,000 miles to 10 years and 125,000 miles. Toyota’s new-vehicle program covers three years or 36,000 miles for bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Purchased through Toyota before the new-vehicle coverage ends, the extended protection is offered at three different levels (Platinum, Gold and Powertrain).

Though technically a vehicle service agreement, these extended service contracts are essentially the same as the original warranty, but notably, that coverage is meant for defects, not things that wear out in the natural course of using the vehicle. In some cases, a third-party service contract might cover more, but it isn’t usually as good a value if you’re fastidious about maintenance.

There are multiple levels, coverage lengths and prices for Toyota depending on the vehicle. One of the best things about Toyota’s extended programs? It’s transferable to new owners, which might make selling your used Toyota much easier or provide some reassurance if gifting it to a family member or friend.

No matter which level you choose it kicks in after the basic factory warranty ends for up to 10 years or 125,000 miles at the highest level. It includes 24-hour roadside assistance and reimbursem*nts for rental cars, accommodation and meals if a breakdown happens far from home. It includes access to the Toyota service network for repairs. The $100 deductible can “disappear” if brought in to the dealer who sold the extended warranty plan.

For new and used Toyota extended warranty lengths are available for 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10 years. For certified used vehicles, you can add one year (or 12,000 miles) with a basic warranty or up to seven (and up to 100,000 total miles) on an extended limited powertrain warranty.

Platinum Protection

For new Toyotas this comprehensive coverage plan includes engine, transmission, axle assembly, suspension, steering, fuel system, cooling system, air conditioning and heating, brakes, electrical, computers and electronics (including airbags) and additional components like door handles and glove compartment mechanisms. For hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles different coverages are also included.

New and used Toyotas can opt for the Platinum (or the two other plans) if their vehicle is still under the new vehicle warranty at the time of enrollment, which is up to three years or 36,000 miles. New vehicles with an extended warranty can add a plan from 3 years or 50,000 miles to 10 years or 125,000 miles. Platinum includes $50 per day for up to five days for rental cars and $100 per day for lodging and meals, but for up to a maximum of five days throughout the agreement.

For used vehicles, terms under the Platinum plan are one year or 12,00 miles to five years to 60,000 miles. To qualify for Platinum, cars must have fewer than 150,000 miles and be within nine model years. Other coverages are the same as for new vehicles.

Toyota’s Platinum Protection plan could cost between $2,300 and $4,100 total depending on the exact duration—3 to 10 years—vehicle model, year and mileage at the date of purchasing the protection plan.

Gold Protection

For new and used Toyotas, Gold Protection offers most major components coverage but only engine, transmission/transfer case, differential and axles. Other inclusions: climate control, front and rear suspension, fuel and electrical systems, steering and brakes and coverage for hybrids or alternative fuel vehicles.

New vehicles with an extended warranty can add a plan from 3 years or 50,000 miles to eight years or 125,000 miles. Gold includes $35 per day for up to five days for rental cars and $50 per day for lodging and meals, but for up to a maximum of four days throughout the agreement.

For used vehicles, terms under the Gold plan are one year or 12,00 miles to five years to 60,000 miles. To qualify for Gold, cars must have fewer than 150,000 miles and be within nine model years. Other coverages are the same as for new vehicles.

Toyota’s Gold Protection plan costs depend on the exact duration—three to eight years—vehicle model, year and mileage at the date of purchasing the protection plan.

Powertrain Protection

The most limited plan, Powertrain Protection is for new Toyotas up to only six years and 100,000 miles with only limited protection for engine, transmission, axle assembly and coverage for hybrid and alternative fuel systems. Powertrain includes $35 per day for up to five days for rental cars and $50 per day for lodging and meals, but for up to a maximum of four days throughout the agreement.

For used cars, coverage is only two years and 24,000 miles. Eligible cars have to be within 12 model years with fewer than 150,000 miles.

Toyota’s Powertrain Protection six-year plan is the most affordable, with estimates around $1,000 per year, but depends on vehicle model, year and mileage at the date of purchasing the protection plan. Also this is the most limited coverage.

Not included in this level:

  • Suspension system
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • HVAC
  • Infotainment system
  • Interior and exterior

What’s Covered by Toyota Extended Warranty Plans?

Different plans come with different coverage levels, but all include engine, manual and automatic transmission, axle assembly and hybrid and alternative fuel systems. Then there’s other basics:

  • The original defect warranty is extended for the selected length of coverage, which means that major components like engines, transmissions and other systems are covered (or come with limited coverage)
  • 24-hour roadside assistance, including towing (for defect-related breakdowns), jump-starts, spare tire installation, winching, fuel emergencies and lockouts.
  • Rental car, meals and lodging reimbursem*nts if repairs take longer than anticipated.
  • Trip interruption coverage if more than 150 miles from home.

What’s Not Covered by Toyota Extended Warranty Plans?

Importantly, the extension of the factory warranty also excludes the same things as that warranty, but it doesn’t extend the new-vehicle corrosion warranty. None of Toyota’s extended warranty plans cover the following:

  • The vehicle frame, unibody and exterior body panels
  • Interior upholstery and fittings
  • Replacement items like fuses, wiper blades, hoses, spark plugs, air bags, tires and fluids, brake pads
  • Batteries
  • Improper vehicle use, specifically having raced it on a track
  • Damage caused by aftermarket parts, performance or aesthetic
  • Wheels and alignment are only covered for a short period after vehicle delivery, and this coverage is not extended
  • Vermin or environmental damage such as flooding
  • Pre-existing damage
  • Any vehicle that has been totaled by an insurance company is ineligible

Other Toyota Protection Plans

In addition to the extended warranty options, there’s other programs to add onto your current Toyota after the new-vehicle ToyotaCare Plan, which expires after two years or 25,000 miles. Before hitting 30,000 miles you can add ToyotaCare Plus Service Drive.

  • Prepaid Maintenance: ToyotaCare Plus Service Drive kicks in at 31,000 miles or fewer for two more years after ToyotaCare. It covers 30,000- and 45,000-mile services, routine maintenance including oil and filter changes, tire rotations and other services under normal driving conditions. The 24-hour roadside assistance extends for another two years.
  • Guaranteed Auto Protection (GAP): If your Toyota is deemed a total loss because of a crash, theft or natural disaster by your insurance provider, this covers the “gap” of the market value your insurance company assesses and the balance on your finance agreement. This waives the balance still due on your contract and includes coverage for your primary insurance deductible up to $1,000.
  • Tire & Wheel Protection: With two different options, Gold or Platinum. Gold is a six-year coverage plan with unlimited claims for tire repair and replacement and wheel replacement. It includes $100 of towing with no limits. There’s also option cosmetic coverage for nicks and scrapes on the wheels, up to six times in the six years. Platinum builds on Gold’s six-year coverage and adds paintless dent repair and windshield repair. Dent repair removes dents up to 4 inches and covers hail damage up to $1,000 (or your deductible). Unlimited repairs. Windshield protection is unlimited for minor chips and cracks on the front windshield. It is not available in Arizona or Florida.
  • Excess Wear & Use: For lessees, this covers up to $5,000 for torn seats, body dents, cracked windows, mirrors or lights, missing buttons and equipment, tire or hubcap damage and other wear and tear on the car at the end of your lease.
  • Key Replacement Protection: Available as part of the Tire & Wheel plan or as a standalone product, it covers up to $800 per occurrence to replace a car key or remote. It includes $100 per lockout for assistance, along with $100 for towing, $75 for transportation reimbursem*nt and $250 for replacement of additional non-programmable keys (up to three times).

Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Warranty and Coverage

For Toyota Certified Used Vehicles the vehicles service agreements plan needs to be purchased when the vehicle is purchased. It’s an option to build onto the limited warranty Toyota offers to its Certified Used Vehicles. Certified Used Vehicles have to be within six model years from the current year and have up to 85,000 total miles max.

The Limited Comprehensive Warranty for Toyota Certified Used vehicles is 1 year or 12,000 miles added onto the odometer. It includes a $0 deductible and a 7-year or 100,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty for major engine, transmission components and all internally lubricated parts. The powertrain warranty includes roadside assistance. For hybrid and fuel cell vehicles it covers 8 years or 100,000 miles.

Like most automakers, Toyota offers extended warranty coverage for used vehicles via its Certified Used Vehicle program. These warranties typically extend the factory coverages. In some cases, buying a demonstrator unit as a certified used vehicle can result in buying a nearly new car with a warranty longer than an actual new one. However, that’s been a less common situation since Covid-19 shrank dealer inventories.

Certified used vehicles are inspected before sale and then certified based on the results of those inspections. Because they’ve been inspected and come with these additional coverages, you can expect to pay more for this vehicle than one without this level of protection, but the cost can vary pretty widely. The additions generally cost about the same as a similar factory extended warranty would, but they’re less hassle than buying a separate plan.

Toyota offers Toyota Certified Protection for after the new-vehicle warranty ends (see above).

As with Toyota’s new-vehicle warranty, standard wear items, damage and aesthetic issues are not covered under these warranties, and the exclusions are basically the same with vehicle maintenance like brake pads, fluids, spark plugs, wiper blade inserts, suspension, body and interior exclusions.
